About the Role

The Director of Fabric R&D will have a deep understanding of the Gap brand, its target customer, product and aesthetic, and work in collaboration with Vice President and Directors of Mens’, Womens’, and KB Design to set the overall global fabric direction for the brand. You partner with cross-functional teams and mills to build and execute strategies that support Brand product, sourcing, and sustainability LRPs. You direct and manage the fabric development process. You have technical fabric knowledge, as well as knowledge of sustainability and and are versed in general quality control (QC) procedures.

What You'll Do

  • Talented editor of fabrics that are brand appropriate, ability to re-envision current fabric portfolio to meet trend needs.
  • Build and execute fabric mill and sourcing strategies, closely partnering with Mill Management, Product Development and Sustainability teams. 
  • Thorough knowledge of sustainable fabrics.  Partners with Sustainability lead and Brand PD leads to ensure LRP roadmap, pacing, and cost parameters are met. 
  • Analyze fabric needs across the brands.  Communicate recommendations to cross functional partners for leveraging opportunities
  • Understands cost structures for both channels (GS+GO) and works with mills to bring appropriate price point options to brand
  • Provide expertise to design, product development, and production teams on fabric construction, content, and finishing to deliver raw material innovation
  • Sets fabric development KPI’s in tandem with PD Leads and Design
  • Attends Fabric Shows and meets with mill partners regularly.  Works closely with mill partners on brand needs, innovation.  Identifies opportunities for competitive sourcing. 

Who You Are

  • In-depth knowledge of fabric constructions, dye techniques, finishes, and garment construction and manufacturing/sourcing processes across woven, knit, sweaters, and performance.  
  • Sound knowledge of concepts and procedures specific to R&D and a basic understanding of the procedures across cross functional teams within design, production, tech design, merchandising quality assurance, sustainability, and sourcing
  • Excellent leadership/management and communication skills with proven ability to influence and make decisions across geographies in a matrixed environment.
  • Strong team leadership and coaching skills
  • Strong negotiation, presentation, and computer skills (PLM/Centric, Excel)
  • Travel, as required.
