About the role

The Product Development Manager drives the product line creation by partnering cross-functionally to develop, communicate, and execute to merchandise strategies within set financial targets and in accordance with our go to market calendar. They work closely within a cross-functional team that includes; Production, Merchandising, Tech Services, IM and Allocation. As well as an Asia-based Gap Inc. Sourcing team to deliver on product design and brand aesthetic while effectively managing average unit cost. The Product Development Manager may have an Associate and/or Assistant Production Managers as their direct reports.

What you'll do

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

  • Minimum 5 years apparel product development/production experience.

  • Denim Product Development experience a plus but not required.

  • Global experience in driving product development and an understanding of design, merchandising, and vendor/category management.

  • Change Management - experience leading with and without authority to influence others and drive decision-making.

  • Learning Agility - demonstrates curiosity, and motivated to learn new skills and knowledge.

  • Resourcefulness - experience in managing dynamic projects that require the ability to flex as obstacles are presented.

  • Collaboration - Proven ability influencing and making decisions cross-functionally in a matrix environment where speed, accuracy and cultural sensitivity is crucial.

  • Personal Leadership - demonstrates executive presence, presentation, influencing, and collaboration across a broader team.

  • Problem Solver- can proactively solve problems efficiently and effectively manage multiple challenges.

  • Global Business Acumen- experience executing on multi-year operational goals, incorporating knowledge of product life cycle, supply chain and macro financial or industry headwinds.

Who you are

  • Execute product development strategies that align with category strategies and divisional goals.

  • Maintain an understanding of our brand aesthetic and collaborate with Design to support the development of the product line within set financial targets and go to market calendar deliverables.

  • Foresee product development implications of product decisions based on category or vendor strategies and nuances.

  • Drive fabric strategies by providing recommendations on fabrics to platform, position, and leverage.

  • Partner with Fabric R&D to provide costing and volume requirements for new fabric developments.

  • Partner with Sourcing Team to collect and provide market information for factory capacity and loading.

  • Demonstrates a forward thinking mindset by contributing ideas that support fabric and product innovation.

  • Maintain an understanding of how certain raw materials perform when in garment form and offer input and recommendations based on customer feedback, vendor innovation, quality improvements, and competition.

  • Leverage technical knowledge and leadership support to troubleshoot and resolve issues that are unique in nature and may require a novel approach.

  • Ensure financial targets are met by communicating costing guidance and influencing cross functional team.

  • Communicate upfront brand costing and strategic goals to Category Sourcing team.

  • Manage fabric and trim liabilities, including monitoring of fabric platform utilization within negotiated timeline.

  • Minimize financial liabilities by developing solutions, presenting recommendations and influencing business partners.

  • Champion effective internal and external partnerships and actively promote cross-functional collaboration to insure business goals are achieved.

  • Commuinicate key information to cross functional partners and product team to execute their roles on time and efficiently.

  • Drive communication between cross-functional team and Asia-based product teams to ensure strategic business alignment and optimal responsiveness.

  • Lead and coach direct reports.

  • Identify, develop and retain talent that delivers to Gap Inc. performance standards.
