Gap Inc.

June 21, 2017

More than the clothes we create, Gap Inc. is defined by its people. Our dedicated, eclectic, passionate culture is driven by pros, with personality. Say hello, get to know us, and take a closer look at what (and who) we’re made of. Meet some of the many people who make Gap Inc. great. #WeAreGapInc

To say that Jessica Beane has some fight in her would be an understatement. Let’s be clear though that the aforementioned “fight” we’re talking about comes in the form of an energy and a drive that goes unrivaled with most anyone you’ll meet. (That, and the fact that you won’t stand a chance against her in the boxing ring.) Call it spunk, call it pluck, call it vivacity, call it spirit – whatever the word, the feeling is the same. Jessica is a powerhouse.

Is it any wonder she’s found herself a formidable hobby in the form of boxing? “It’s funny to find something you’re so passionate about at this point in your life. But you never stop learning about yourself! Boxing is so high intensity. It’s perfect for me.” And the Global Integrity Manager and 10-year Gap Inc. employee brings that same passion and energy to her job, just as much as she did on her first day here.

But with her fight comes a positivity that’s so unbreakable, it’s impossible for it not to catch hold of you. “Every day is a choice. I choose to be happy. I wake up happy every day, and I own that.”

(We’re Rocky-at-the-top-of-the-stairs-ing right now.) Meet Jessica.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR GAP INC.?

I support employees making ethical decisions by managing the Code of Business Conduct (COBC) global program and Principles of Integrity (POI) suite of training.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

People that do for others. I’m always inspired when I hear stories of people who make an impact on someone else, or a community or people in need – those moments of everyday people doing a small thing, that makes a big impact on someone else. I see examples of this all the time. It’s a great reminder that good people do great things. I try to do my part, but when I hear stories of how someone made an impact on another’s life, I am inspired to do more!

STYLE PERSONALITY

Comfortably confident (C-squared). I’m very much a “Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good” type of person. So one day, I might feel comfortable in a nice dress, and the next day, it might be jeans and a t-shirt. It’s all planned based on what I have going on that day, and putting me in a frame of mind that I feel good, it allows me to exude confidence in what I’m doing.

GO-TO OUTFIT

My nightly uniform: Gap yoga pants, and a t-shirt. I put it on the second I get home. Of course, I have a lot of pairs of yoga pants, and plenty of t-shirts, so I’m not wearing the same ones over and over!

ALL-TIME FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING

My Gap jean jacket. I bought it when I started working for the company back in 1999. And it still looks great!

LAST PURCHASE

A racerback tank for an upcoming Spartan Race. Back to my “style personality” of feeling good and doing good – I bought this race-branded attire. It’s my first Spartan Race, and even though I’ve been training hard, I feel that if I look the part, I’ll act the part and do well!

WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED FROM CUSTOMERS

My “customers” are Gap Inc. employees. I’ve learned over the years that the employees here make my job a jumping off point, rather than a come-from-behind approach. We are a company made up of people with high integrity. I think people are drawn to Gap Inc. because of the culture, and because they want to work for a company they know they can be proud of. My job is to keep that momentum going.

FAVORITE GAP INC. MOMENT

When Don Fisher called me. Many years ago, we were successful on a pretty significant matter (the details of which aren’t important). But when all was said and done, Don Fisher called to say congratulations. It was an honor to receive the call, and what I remember most is that he stayed on the phone and we chatted for a few minutes, beyond just the thank you. He took the time to personally call me, and share his appreciation with me. It goes back to my earlier comment about small things making a big impact. It was a small gesture, but it meant a lot to me. It was almost 20 years ago, and it still stands out.

FIRST JOB

Wendy’s, in the beach town I grew up in, Pacifica, California.

EPIPHANY MOMENT

Coming back to work here. I started in 1999, and left in 2004 when I had my first son. I came back in 2011, my first full-time job since having kids, and my motto became “work hard, play hard.”  Pretty much every weekend and weeknight has something going on, but I figure I can have more leisure time when the kids move out of the house. For now, it’s non-stop.

ALWAYS PUTS YOU IN A GOOD MOOD

Music. I have an eclectic taste in music, but I’m always put in a good mood when a great song comes on. If I’m in my car, on a sunny day with the windows rolled down, and I have the music on loud, that puts me in the best mood!

THEME SONG

Ha, that changes often. Right now it’s “Eye of the Tiger” (from the movie Rocky). I started boxing last year and I’m in the ring a few hours a week now. I love when this song comes on because then I feel like I’m in a movie – but even if it’s not on, it’s playing in my mind.

SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU

I’m an early riser. I wake up at 4:30 a.m. every weekday and by 5 or so on the weekends. I like the quiet, and with two active boys, it’s my time to drink coffee, catch up on the news or tidy up the house (it’s strange, I know!). Once a week, I get up at 3:30 a.m. so that I can meet my boxing coach before I go into Spartan training. Sometimes I feel like I’ve put in a full day by 8 a.m., and it’s not uncommon to see me eating lunch around 9.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT GAP INC.?

That’s easy – the people I work with. I enjoy my co-workers very much.

WHAT MAKES YOUR JOB UNIQUE?

That what I do impacts each and every employee.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

It allows me to work with people all over the globe, and I love that I know that I can pick up the phone and call my colleagues in any country – Japan, Vietnam, UK, China, etc. – whenever I need to. I’m a very social person and it makes me feel like I have friends all over the world.
