About the Role

The Data and Insights organization at the Gap is transforming how data is available and used for advanced analytics, insights and decisioning across our portfolio of brands. A key enabler to this is the adoption and evangelization of cutting-edge designs, technology and process – spanning data platforms and cloud infrastructure, data engineering, governance and compliance, reporting and dashboards, and MLOps.

We are looking for an energetic and passionate Sr. Staff Software Engineer to help execute this transformation. This role will help design, develop and support high quality near real time data pipelines tools/libraries and data products/tables.

What You'll Do

  • Mentor junior engineers - help understand the tech stack and rationale, development processes, designs and big picture. Guide execution and help unblock as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with technical team members to develop, deploy and operate derived data products/tables. 
  • Design, develop and/or enhance common frameworks for data engineering acceleration, data quality checks, scheduled and ad-hoc data sharing, remediation runbooks, effective DataOps.
  • Understand and evangelize security, governance and compliance standards. Build technical and process frameworks for enablement and enforcement. 
  • Evangelize and enforce common development and code quality frameworks and practices such as style guides, code coverage, continuous integration, peer reviews and pair programming.
  • Work with product managers, architects, TPMs to break down ambiguity in requirements and designs, propose/prototype solutions and technologies, own/provide feedback on technical designs/data models, curate technical backlogs for technical debt management and continuous improvement, size and estimate, prioritize and execute.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders. Keep leadership apprised of progress, issues and concerns.

Who You Are

  • 8 or more years of active data engineering / warehouse experience – designing, developing, deploying and supporting data pipelines and data products/tables at scale and in production.
  • 5 or more years of software development experience - Writing advanced SQL queries and query optimization, Automation using Linux shell & Python scripting, code organization / craftsmanship & agile practices.
  • 4 or more years of proven experience leveraging Azure cloud data and analytics services (ADLS, ADF, Azure SQLDB/Synapse, AAS, Power BI).
  • 3 or more years of experience developing and deploying data processing/quality frameworks at scale and in production. 
  • Design, develop & performance tune Analytics/ OLAP Cube (Azure Analysis Services - preferred, Microsoft SSAS, DAX - Tabular Model, MDX Multi-Dimensional Model).
  • Strong experience in triaging production issues, identifying the root cause and fixing code/history restatement.
  • Perform on-call support.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, or equivalent experience.
  • Self-starter, able to work with moderate supervision. Proven experience working in and/or leading innovation programs and/or ambiguous requirements.
  • Experience working in Retail sector with e-commerce / logistics data is preferred.
  • Data processing experience using pySpark and Spark‐ SQL at scale is a plus.
