Gap Inc.

May 24, 2017

More than the clothes we create, Gap Inc. is defined by its people. Our dedicated, eclectic, passionate culture is driven by pros, with personality. Say hello, get to know us, and take a closer look at what (and who) we’re made of. Meet some of the many people who make Gap Inc. great. #WeAreGapInc

How often do you think about the journey a piece of clothing has taken to make its way into your closet? It’s an adventure really, from a fiber’s beginning stages all the way to the first day you decide to take your new purchase out for a spin. There’s an expansive web of people and processes behind that adventure, and the man captaining the ship here at Gap Inc. is Michael Yee.

As Executive Vice President of Global Supply Chain: Sourcing and Production for Gap Inc. (it’s a mouthful!), Michael is one of the coolest and sharply dressed cucumbers you’ll meet here. Which is saying something considering the vastness and complexity of his crew, working with suppliers, vendors, and partners all over the world. “Our job is all about building that collaborative ecosystem that makes the most of each link in the chain. It’s complex and fascinating, and because of that, the final product is never boring.”

Join Michael for a peek behind his adventures, see what he buys from our brands (the man knows our product inside and out — literally!), and learn more about the people behind our products. Meet Michael.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR GAP INC.?

I lead our (extremely) talented Global Sourcing and Production teams, who help develop our world-class product creation ecosystem.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I’m drawn to the stories behind “greatness” in art, athletics, and business. I appreciate innovation, whether it’s a new way of thinking, or creating innovative products that are truly differentiated and unique.

STYLE PERSONALITY

I’m generally conservative, with a little color and individual touches that are unique to me — but I always put an emphasis on quality.

GO-TO OUTFIT

Banana Republic’s cotton/linen jacket, their Suprima cotton dress shirt, Gap’s selvedge denim, and Grenson’s ‘Ellery’ color suede shoes.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING

My old Vancouver Grizzlies basketball jersey!

LAST PURCHASE

Old Navy Go-Dry Performance Tee.

WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED FROM CUSTOMERS

Customers may have different geographic preferences or price expectations but they all have one thing in common: an appreciation for value.

FAVORITE GAP INC. MOMENT

I’m based in Hong Kong, so when Gap opened stores in the Greater China area, it was very exciting. I was finally able to shop Gap Kids & Baby for my family!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM WORKING WITH GARMENT EXPERTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD?

They are very talented people who have a real passion for their craft.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Being able to work with so many different types of individuals from all around the world who help bring our product to market. I truly love the art and science in our business.

WHAT’S AN INSPIRING MOMENT FROM A RECENT TRIP?

When I was in Haiti, I was very impressed by the fast-paced development of their manufacturing capability and the positive impact that apparel manufacturing has in the community.

ALWAYS PUTS YOU IN A GOOD MOOD

Just hanging out with my family. I really enjoy watching my kids play sports.

THEME SONG

“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen.

SOMETHING MANY PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU

My family was in the apparel manufacturing business for a few generations in China and India.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT GAP INC.?

The people and the culture!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Getting to interact with so many creative and innovative people — and seeing the outcome of the creative process in well-crafted products that are also produced at scale.

WHY GAP INC.?

Retail is going through some fundamental shifts and interruptions right now, but with our scale, talent, and capability, I believe that Gap Inc. is one of the few companies that will take market share and win. It’s truly an exciting place to be.
