Signing the Women’s Empowerment Principles in honor of Women’s History Month.

From the day that first Gap store opened in 1969, Gap Inc. co-founders Doris and Don Fisher understood that unleashing the economic power of women was a key to the company’s — and society’s — success. It is why today, the workforce at Gap Inc. is 73 percent women — and a place where both genders earn equal pay for equal work. It is also why the company invests in programs such as Gap Inc. P.A.C.E., which provides work and life skills for the women who make our clothes.

This week, Gap Inc. CEO Art Peck signed the U.N. Women’s Empowerment Principles, highlighting what Gap Inc. has always done — provide equal opportunity to women in the workplace, marketplace and community.

“We are committed to creating employment opportunities and positioning more women to define and lead our company,” Peck said. “Our values and action align well with the Women's Empowerment Principles. We hope that by partnering with other leading companies on this initiative, we can advance women and gender equality around the world.”

The principles call for companies to take action to promote gender equality with real-life business practices — a commitment embedded in Gap Inc.’s DNA.
