TOKYO – April 27, 2011– As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting Japan’s disaster relief efforts, Gap (Japan) K.K. today announced that it will donate 5 percent of its Gap store net sales to Japan Red Cross for a period of approximately two weeks, starting on April 27 and running through May 9, 2011. The proceeds from net sales generated throughout its fleet of about 106 Gap stores will be distributed by the Japan Red Cross directly to victims affected in the disaster area.
As a way to drive customer participation, Gap stores will also offer customers a 15 percent discount on all purchases during the same period.
“We want to continue finding ways to support those that were affected by the disaster, and invite our customers to participate as a way to help us all move more quickly towards a full recovery,” said John Ermatinger, President Gap Japan KK.
Gap Inc. Japan Relief Efforts To-Date
- On March 14, Gap Foundation made a $200,000 grant to Global Giving to provide emergency and disaster support and services – including food, water, medical supplies and other immediate needs.
- Since March 14, Gap Inc. has been collecting donations from its 134,000 employees worldwide through an online system. The company automatically matches employee donations.
- On March 24, Gap Inc. donated $1.1 million (USD) of clothing to those in the affected areas in Iwate, Miyagi and Sendai.
- On March 28, Gap started to sell exclusively designed T-shirts online and in 12 flagship stores in the US with profits directed to Japan relief efforts.
- Each Gap Japan store has a donation box located at the register, and all donations from customers are given to the Red Cross in Japan and directed towards relief efforts.
