About the Role

The Data and Insights organization at the Gap is transforming how data is used for insights and decisioning across our portfolio of brands. A key enabler to this is the research, development and evangelization of modern designs, technology, and process – spanning cloud data platforms, federated data engineering, effective governance, and MLOps among others.

We are looking for an energetic and passionate Principal Engineer (Technical Director) to help execute this transformation. This role will set the technical direction and guide the execution, adoption, and operations of the MLOps platform across a wide community of data scientists, product engineers and business users.

What You'll Do

What You'll Do 

  • Be the technical expert of all things MLOps - through proven experience, continuous learning, and experimentation. 
  • Define: Work with a diverse group of data scientists, data engineers, product engineers and leaders to understand, influence and inform how we prep, train, package, deploy, scale, and monitor ML models and other data science artifacts. 
  • Design: Build and evangelize the technical strategy for the Gap MLOps platform, and the tactics to achieve and inform it. This will be in collaboration with Data Science and Technology leadership, and in support of business LRPs. 
  • Spike: Identify and organize technical capability gaps and opportunities. Scope and execute technology proof of concepts, prototypes and pilots with well-defined success and exit criteria. 
  • Execute: Own the design and quality attributes (NFRs) of the MLOps platform components. Collaborate and guide execution, operations, and continuous improvements. 
  • Onboard: Provide key services and guidance to integrate with the model lifecycle processes of internal and external Data Science teams of varying maturity. 
  • Mentor: and guide engineers and leads - help understand tech stack and design rationale, quality attributes and tradeoffs, big picture through tactical steps, technical areas of strength and opportunities.  

Who You Are 

  • 10 or more years of data science, data engineering or related experience, with at least 6 of those actively enabling or building models in industry. 
  • 4 or more years of active MLOps execution experience, in production, on the cloud - using Microsoft Azure or cloud agnostic technologies. 
  • Proven expertise in model lifecycle stages and tools, CI/CD and advanced packaging, versioning and deployment strategies, containers and serverless architecture, online/offline feature stores, model performance monitoring. 
  • Advanced python and related programming skills. Strong SQL. 
  • Broad knowledge of machine learning and statistics. 
  • Proven experience and tactics bridging the gap between engineering and data science functions. 
  • Proven success playing technical leadership role(s) in innovation programs.
