Visionary Entrepreneur, Arts Patron, and Co-Founder of Gap Inc.

Doris F. Fisher, a pioneering force in American retail and a devoted advocate for the arts and education, passed away peacefully in San Francisco in 2026 at the age of 94. She leaves behind a legacy that transformed the way the world shops and gave new meaning to the fusion of business success with philanthropic purpose.

Born in San Francisco in 1931, Doris Feigenbaum grew up in a family steeped in values of enterprise, culture, and community service. She graduated from Stanford University in 1953, where she studied economics and cultivated a sharp business mind.

In 1969, with her husband, the late Donald G. Fisher, Doris co-founded The Gap after a frustrating shopping experience when Don couldn’t find a pair of jeans that fit. That one small store in San Francisco became the foundation for a global retail empire. Under their leadership, Gap Inc. expanded to include Banana Republic and Old Navy, reshaping American fashion with a focus on simplicity, accessibility, and social responsibility.

Doris Fisher’s influence extended far beyond merchandising and store design. She helped shape the cultural tone of Gap advertising and product development, maintaining a quiet but steadfast presence in the company’s evolution and pushing the company to focus intently on the customer. "We must have complete knowledge of what we want to stand for in our business. That will make our store sing with excitement for the type of customer we want to appeal to — and have complete awareness as to our customers’ needs," she said.

Her legacy in retail was matched by her deep commitment to the arts. Together with her husband, Doris amassed one of the largest private collections of modern and contemporary art in the country. In 2009, the family pledged more than 1,100 works to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, one of the largest gifts of its kind. "Art challenges you," she said in a rare public statement about the collection.

Doris was also a devoted education advocate. She served on the board of KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program), a network of high-performing charter schools aimed at creating opportunity for underserved students. Her support went beyond donations—she believed passionately in educational equity.

She is survived by her three sons—Robert, William, and John—all of whom have carried forward the family’s business and philanthropic commitments with SFMOMA, KIPP, Stanford University, The Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco, the SF Symphony, and The Gap Foundation.

In addition to her children, she is lovingly remembered by her 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, each of whom she encouraged to follow their passions—whether in business, the arts, education, or public service. Her home was often filled with the energy and laughter of her growing extended family.

She was especially delighted by the arrival of her great-grandchildren, whose early steps, drawings, and recitals she followed with the same attentiveness she once applied to merchandising meetings and museum walls. Family members recall her warm, quiet presence at birthday parties, graduations, and holiday gatherings. In the words of her nephew, "Family is everything to her."

Though she preferred a private life, those who knew Doris Fisher speak of her clarity of purpose, quiet confidence, and unwavering focus. She will be remembered not only as a retail visionary and art patron, but as a woman who helped shape the cultural and educational fabric of her time. "We do our best to lead by example,” she once said, “Not because others are watching, but because it’s the right thing to do."

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or the KIPP Foundation Northern California, in honor of Doris Fisher’s enduring legacy.
