About the Role

In this role, you will design highly scalable and high performing technology solutions in an Agile work environment by developing creative, innovative and sustainable solutions using Agile practices. You will collaborate closely with business support teams, product managers, security and architecture to promote new concepts, principles, and methodologies resolving critical production issues to help simplify and improve business processes through the latest in technology and automation. You are a technical expert and will lead through the requirements gathering, design, development, deployment, and support phases of a product. You will leverage your significant knowledge of our technologies and architecture to influence the direction of the product and organization.

The Stores Engineering team is responsible for all technologies that go into 2800+ stores across North America, Europe and APAC. Our stores process millions of transactions at Point-of-Sale systems across all four billion-dollar+ Gap Inc. brands.

In this role as Principal Engineer, you will collaborate cross-functionally with Product Management, Technical Operations, Program Management and other Engineering peers to build and improve multiple features across high volume microservices running in the Cloud powering payments, loyalty, associate productivity, and other omni-channel products.

  • The Principal Software Engineer role is hands-on and responsible for guiding teams in the implementation of critical technical solutions from inception to Production. The role is very strategic in the growth and technological advancement of Stores Engineering applications at GapTech. This leader will work to ensure their team follows modern technology practices, works to continuously improve, and rapidly delivers value.
  • You have the hands on skills to go deep with building high volume, internet-scale microservices based architectures, relational, non-relational databases, operating systems and networking.
  • You advocate for best practices and improved processes within the team and with internal partners; stay up to date with technology trends and innovations.
  • You take ownership, work collaboratively, and lead strategic communications with technical and product/design team members to develop and maintain product features following Agile development principles
  • You foster strategic thinking and creating sustainable solutions that span across projects and domains while maintaining simplicity, reliability, manageability, scalability, extensibility, performance, and re-use
  • You install and reinforce best-in-class DevOps practices with end-to-end “design, build and run” responsibilities and develop code using standards-based solutions, drive adoption via mentoring and guiding others. The Principal Software Engineer will also be responsible for coaching and mentoring multiple software engineers and Tech Leads.

Who You Are

  • Experience with translating organizational goals and product vision to achieve business success.
  • Strategic partner and thought leader with experience in influencing all levels and achieving alignment.
  • Strategic problem solver that is able to lead senior level teams developing creative solutions.
  • Expert knowledge of complex software languages and platforms such as Java, Oracle, Azure etc. and emerging languages.
  • 12+ years of experience in Software Engineering. Experience with relevant backend technologies like Java, Springboot based microservices, Kubernetes and Cloud native technologies.
  • 4+ years of development experience building microservices using REST APIs and exposing them through API Gateways
  • In-depth knowledge and technical expertise with Authentication and Authorization and secure software development practices using OAuth and OIDC. Experience with Point-Of-Sale systems is a plus.
  • Experience with running workloads on Public Clouds such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, and experience with container-based technologies like Docker, Kubernetes and Cloud Foundry
  • Extensive experience and proficiency with database technologies such as MySQL, MongoDB, Cosmos, Oracle or other similar databases
  • Expertise in designing and delivering highly available distributed systems with performance and security in mind, as well as with event driven systems and streaming using Kafka and Rabbit MQ is highly desired
  • Experience with modern DevOps development tools including Git, Jenkins, JIRA, PagerDuty and logging/monitoring tools such as New Relic and Splunk
