About the role

The Old Navy Fashion Studio is seeking an accomplished Associate Art Director of note to become one of the key creative leaders on our growing brand. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional professional background directing the creation of best-of-class fashion photography across editorial, laydown, and e-commerce categories, as well as being highly motivated, self-directed, and able to thrive in an atmosphere of rapid development. This role will require a superb eye for style, visual composition, and attention to detail, as well as an exceptional talent for understanding fashion, creating new style directions, and being able to make those ideas a reality on set. It represents an unequaled opportunity to remake the fashion retailing landscape for a uniquely talented Associate Art Director with a proven track record of creative leadership at the highest levels of the fashion industry.

What you'll do

  • Art direct the highest quality photography/video for all Old Navy product categories

  • Work in the photo studio under direction of the Senior Director, Creative independently and alongside fellow associate art directors, stylists, & photographers capturing digital product and marketing imagery

  • Art direct ecommerce product on-figure (with the ability to direct off-figure) as well as directing seasonal campaign marketing photography

  • Understand the needs of each marketing vehicle and “best practices” to develop creative that will have the greatest impact to the customer.

  • Work closely with the Manager, Photography to identify new ways to shoot photography that will create agility and flexibility in the marketing pipeline.

  • Review digital captures on a daily basis, mark potential reshoots, and approve all product category photography for upload

  • Ensure daily workload is completed within SLA – raise red flags when in jeopardy, working with Manager, Photography to resolve roadblocks.

  • Proactively identify challenges in workflow or process and use critical thinking to provide Senior Director, Creative with potential solutions

    and ensure creation of all process documentation.

  • Maintain consistently high standards for accuracy, aesthetics, and productivity

  • Partner with manager, photographers, stylists, associate art directors, product coordinator and sample manager to ensure production expectations are met

  • Build innovative processes with impact from the ground up

  • Develop techniques and best practices for shooting new categories/projects

  • Maintain and develop product style guides (on & off-figure) for Old Navy’s photo studio

  • Interact directly with Old Navy Studio teams to receive visual guidance and implement process improvement

  • Collect and analyze data and testing solutions for process improvements and new initiatives

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s degree (BFA) or equivalent in related field

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in retail fashion photo art direction

  • Overseen and/or partnered with branches of Art Direction, Producers, and Stylists

  • A portfolio that demonstrates an ability to turn ideas into a strong creative vision for Old Navy

  • Ability to facilitate the creative development process, including providing clear direction, and producing stellar creative on brand and on schedule

  • Proven history to manage multiple projects at one time to meet aggressive deadlines

  • Unwavering attention to detail and an acute awareness that everything counts

  • Relentless desire for innovation, balanced with business and user interaction priorities

  • Demonstrated business acumen and customer focus

  • Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced online environment


  • Knowledge and experience with rich media and digital advertisement creation

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (photoshop, in-design, illustrator), Capture One, and Microsoft Office

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and synthesize feedback from the Senior Creative Director, merchants, marketers, and product teams into creative direction.

  • Expert understanding of the web production process; familiarity with post-production retouching

  • Strong people management and coaching skills to provide clear creative direction and to motivate and inspire creative teams

  • Mastery of the principals of design, color theory, and file creation optimized for the web

  • Approach design solutions with knowledge of style trends and customer expectations
