Describe a typical day for you at work.
I manage a team of four
people within Banana Republic Canada Planning. A typical day for us consists
of reacting to current business. Even though Planning develops pre-season
merchandise plans four times a year, we focus on managing inventory as it
arrives in-season. We constantly identify risks and opportunities within our
business and recommend strategies to achieve our financial goals. Some of the
ways that we do this are by creating monthly financial forecasts, making
product markdown recommendations and identifying additional product
opportunities.
What do you like about your job?
I have been in Planning for
the last five years (the last two specifically for Canada). Being in an
international business is quite rewarding. Since there is less of a
traditional cross-functional team than you would normally see in the domestic
businesses, there is a larger sense of ownership and partnership. I know that
everything I do affects the businesses that I manage, and I can see the
immediate results.
What do you like about working at Gap Inc.?
Most people know
that Gap Inc. has great benefits, clothing discounts and career opportunities
for their employees, but the number one reason I like working here is the
people. I have never met so many driven and passionate people, all of whom
want to improve constantly. That's what keeps me inspired and coming to work.
I have a great team — both here at headquarters and in the stores — that works
really hard, and I can see that in our financial results every day.
What do you like about living in the Bay Area?
Although San
Francisco is a big city, it feels small when you see a familiar face every
day. San Franciscans are diverse and open to new ways of doing things while
being committed and involved in their communities. Some people don’t really
"get" the weather, but I say you can't beat having no snow underfoot in the
winter while having the mountains only a few hours away and the beach right in
your backyard! On top of it all, after living in San Francisco for six years,
I realize there are only a few other places in the world that have the variety
of food we do. What's not to like?
