Improving Worker Conditions
Based on our company’s strengths and the ways in which our business connects us to the community, we focus our outreach and social investment efforts on helping young people in the developed world and women in the developing world achieve a healthy and more productive future. For example, every year through Gap Foundation’s community partners, we provide services to thousands of underserved youth and young adults through programs such as “This Way Ahead,” “Plan Ahead,” and “Camp Old Navy.”
Globally, we are committed to creating opportunities for women to advance and lead, both within our company and among the communities in which we work. We partner with suppliers to implement the Gap Inc. P.A.C.E. (Personal Advancement & Career Enhancement) program that provides female garment workers with life skills education and technical training, so they are able to pursue workplace promotions, and in turn, earn higher wages. Gap Inc.’s P.A.C.E. program is currently operational with 22 vendors in more than 50 factories in seven countries (Cambodia, China, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam). To date, more than 20,000 women have participated in the program.
We also encourage our more than 130,000 employees to volunteer in whatever way best applies their unique skills to meet long-term community needs –from offering legal support at a family services agency to providing opportunities for underserved youth to develop career skills. In 2012, we estimate that more than 70,000 employees volunteered 459,600 hours, dedicating their time and talent to creating positive change in their communities.
Women make up 80% of garment workers worldwide, but relatively few advance to supervisor or manager roles in the workplace.

Gap Inc. has been named to CR Magazine’s “Best Corporate Citizens” list, climbing from #6 to #3—our highest place to date.

Animal Welfare Policy
We are deeply committed to the ethical sourcing of our product, which includes the humane treatment of animals. We expect all suppliers to make our branded and private label products in an ethical and responsible way. We require suppliers to only use skins, down and feathers that come from animals bred for food. In addition:
- We do not use angora or real fur.
- We oppose mulesing, and are phasing out the use of mulesed wool.
- We prohibit feathers and down plucked from live birds.
- We do not allow animal testing on our personal care products.
