Education: University of Arizona, B.S., Retail and Consumer Sciences; minor, Business Administration and Consumer Studies.
How started at Gap Inc.: Summer Internship program, June 2007; Retail Management Program, 2008. Currently Assistant Merchandiser with Old Navy.
How did you get involved with the Summer Internship program?
I had first heard of the program through the Retail and Consumer Sciences program at U of A. I felt that Gap Inc.’s program, in particular, encompassed everything I was looking for in a summer experience. So I set all my goals towards landing this internship.
Can you share an anecdote about your time in the program, i.e an assignment you handled particularly well?
My summer-long project was an in-depth competitive analysis of men’s denim. I did a "deep-dive" on the competition, the customer, and developed an understanding of how I could translate product trends I was seeing in the marketplace into the Old Navy Men’s line. I ended up presenting my project to the entire Men’s cross-functional team, along with our VP of merchandising, and I think it was hugely beneficial for the business. The analysis gave us a strong benchmark and direction of how we wanted to drive the future growth strategy of the denim assortment.
What did you take away from the experience?
One of the reasons I chose this company is because of its role in product development from start to finish. During my internship, I was able to get hands on experience making actual influences on the product, which ultimately drove business results. It was very rewarding to me. I also appreciated how much time and commitment the internship team and my manager invested in me, and the program helped me confirm my own career goal to go into merchandising after college. The entire program absolutely exceeded my expectations.
What does it take to be a part of a program like this?
I think it takes the skill-set and interest in the industry, but more than anything, it takes passion. An internship is a general place to learn if the career and work environment suits you. But to have that passion and love for what we do here at Gap is really what sets you apart.
