How started at Gap Inc.: Hired in 2010 as an Inventory Planning Analyst, Gap.
What’s unique about this program?
In addition to classroom instruction about the basics on what it takes to be an Inventory Planner, Inventory Analyst or Inventory Allocator, we get true “on-the-job” experience. What’s really cool is that participants are from across all brands, so you get a cross-divisional experience.
What do you like best about this part of the retail business?
That is exactly why I love it. Things can change in the blink of an eye and you have to be able to adapt and react to that situation. It makes the job more enjoyable, instead of doing the same thing, day in and day out.
So what was the most challenging?
When I joined the company, I had to learn an entirely new set of inventory management planning tools. I had worked at other retailers before, but the systems at Old Navy were completely new and different.
And how did the Inventory Management Program help on this front?
The classes were taught by HR professionals as well as current company analysts and planners – so I got a real-life glimpse into how these systems are used to impact the business.
The program helped me understand what systems and reports to look at to make sure our business is running smoothly. I also learned how to trouble shoot problems—like being overstocked or under-stocked in a specific product. It also taught me how to create future financial plans and maintain current ones.
What advice would you give someone looking at your career path?
The Inventory Management Program is a great way to get a crash course in this field and gives you a really solid foundation. I also realized that, once you know the basics, you can figure it out on your own.
