How did you start at Old Navy?
In 2005, during high school, I started working part-time at the Old Navy store in Burnsville, Minn. and continued to work at different stores throughout high school and college. After graduation, I knew I loved the company and what it stood for. So I started looking around for opportunities. I was lucky to be a part of the test group for Old Navy’s Accelerated Management Program.
What is unique about the Accelerated Management Program?
It’s a 12-18 month program that gives recent college graduates a chance to take a deep dive into different management positions in the store through a variety of learning opportunities including E-learning, in-store training and job shadowing field leaders. Right now I am a Service and Training Manager, and in January 2011, I will rotate to the Operations side. So you end up with an elevated experience in your store and within the field organization.
So, what has been the most fun?
All of these opportunities are amazing! I visited stores with my District Manager; seeing the business through her eyes gave me such a fresh perspective. And I also spent a day with our loss prevention supervisor and really learned what I can do at my level to prevent shrink and loss.
What has been the most challenging?
Time management – because you have extra things to do in addition to your day-to-day store responsibilities. But since all the “extras” are such great learning opportunities, I made an effort to be a better time manager and delegator- all skills I need to be an effective store leader.
Anything that surprised you?
Through this program, I have really developed a passion for training and development. It fascinates me to see that “light” go off and see others succeed.
